Paint Patio Cushions

Yes, you can paint patio cushions!

My patio furniture was dull and boring.

I painted the bench shown and two matching chairs.

I first primed it with one coat of primer. I used a roller for the top and a brush for the sides.

After I primed it I painted it with 2 coats of regular outdoor paint I bought from Walmart.

My significant other painted the wicker bench with regular white outdoor paint and primer using a paint gun.

This project was easy and made such a difference. The patio furniture has new life!

Does the paint smudge on clothing?

    1. Not at all. Just make sure it’s completely dry before you sit on it. 4 years later and I’m still using this set and haven’t had to do any touch up paint at all.

The cushions look awesome! Does the primer and outdoor paint make the cushions hard? Crunchy?

    1. They aren’t as soft as they were before but they aren’t crunchy or hard either. They still have some bounce/give to them. They are still very comfortable.

Wow, what an amazing project! Do you have to wash or the cushions first? Mine seem a bit dusty and I'm wondering whether that would affect paint adhesion?

  4. Thanks for sharing this great knowledge with us. I was unaware from this paint I normally used to buy cushions from Outdoor Cushions Dubai which offers me great quality and colors with new design. But after reading your blog i decided to change my cushion color from white to teal using this paint.

  5. Did you have KILZ stain blocker tinted that turquoise. I was thinking of using RIT DYE but maybe I will paint.

Hello Smart Momma, Im impressed with the results of the cushions. We have Red colored cushions similar to the cushions you changed to the Turquoise color. Ours are lightly starting to fade from sun exposure (no stains). We want to keep our cushions a Red color. You mention you used outdoor paint. Can you tell us the specific brand, type paint you used. Also since we are staying with the same Red color, would we still use the Kilz primer? Thanks

I used the Walmart brand ColorPlace. It was normal exterior paint. I highly doubt you would need to use KILZ if you are painting them a similar color.
