This is the BEFORE picture.
And AFTER
I used a push broom to clean the patio with the waterhose and bleach.
I used a stepping stone mold as a template and flipped it upside down. I then spray painted each section. (I used Rust-Oleum Hammered spray paint) I had 6 different colors of spray paint. Sometimes I mixed the spray paint colors to make the stones look real. After the spray paint dried I applied concrete sealer.
Below is a close up picture of the "stones".
It only took 2 hours and about $60 to do this project. And I plan on using the concrete stepping stone mold for another project.
How long ago did you do it and has it lasted? I would love to do something like this on my little porch that is gated, how did you keep the spray paint from not getting into the other areas as when I spray paint it goes everywhere. I have cement paint I bet I could get some paint color too add to parts of it and use that. Thanks for giving me a great idea. If I ever learn how to post my own pictures I will post it when I am done if it turns out ok.
ReplyDeleteI did it in mid-September. After the spray paint dried I used a concrete sealer on it. It still looks great today, even after the snow and ice that was on it. The way I kept the spray paint from getting into the other areas was by keeping the spray paint can pretty close to the concrete. And even if it did get into some of the other areas I didn't mind because I mixed the colors every so often to make it look more like stones.

ReplyDeleteUgh!! I'm so bummed, now! I had a mold like this, and a 'brick' one. After many years of not getting around to making a pathway with them, I got rid of them! This would've of been great on my boring concrete patio.

ReplyDeleteI did not use any mortar at all. It's just spray paint. The mold I used keeps the spray paint from bleeding between the "mortar" lines although it's not mortar...just the existing concrete.

I used your idea and directions but could did not have the template so I cut sponges in the shapes I wanted and used them to print my "stones". I had bits and pieces of cans of paint in the shed and just mixed them up. I'm sealing it today. I would not have known where to begin (or end - concrete sealer) if you had not shared your work and "how to". THANK YOU!

My husband and I just bought and older home and we love it. We have been trying to figure out what to do with our front concrete patio look a little nicer. Thank you for your inspiration. I just purchased a cabin that has concrete floors. I do eventually plan on laying tile down, however I am saving for that phase and it will be about a year before that happens. In the meantime, I believe this is a great substitute for the tiles. Great idea. I would have never thought of this idea to solve the drab floor situation.

ReplyDeleteI did this so long ago that I don't know the exact colors. I just went to Lowes and picked colors that look like natural stone.

ReplyDeleteIt is not any more slippery than regular concrete. Concrete sealer is usually used on concrete anyways so I haven't noticed a difference in the slipperiness.
